Moving Day

There was a house in Bismarck, ND that was possibly empty and needed
to be repossessed or the balance brought current. We had a Writ for
possession so we could take the home with the help of the Sheriff.
Bismarck, ND is nine hours away from St. Paul, MN so it was very
important to repossess the home on the first visit.

When I got to the home it was about 5pm, about four hours before dark.
All the blinds that had been left open and the home looked empty, except
for the large barking dog roaming the house and one room that the blinds
were closed and the door was shut. There are no cars in the driveway.

The debtor worked for Pepsi Co. and there was a delivery truck parked
down the street. I believed the debtor was holed up in the bedroom so if I
broke into home the dog could attack me or the debtor may come out of
the bedroom and shoot me. The Bismarck Sheriff needs a couple of days
to schedule a Writ of Possession and I didn’t have a couple of days.

I decided to go to the bedroom window where I believed the debtor was
and started pounding on the window saying “It’s time to get up, it’s
moving day” as loud as I could, over and over again. With no response I
went back to my car to call the Sheriff to setup the eviction when the
debtor comes running out of the house and gets a couple of inches from
my face and asks “are you the one pounding on my window?”. I told him
it’s not his window unless he wants to pay the balance due.

The debtor settled down told me the sad story of his divorce, and agreed
to have his things out by the next morning so the Sheriff didn’t have to
come to remove him from the home.
