The "Handshake" Rule

My current business partner Tim and I were out on a training day at our
previous company Greenpoint Credit. This training was for Tim to go from
being a behind the desk collector to a field collector. We discussed how
the approach is completely different and how to read debtors actions and
body language. I told Tim one of the things I learned was never shake a
debtors hand after he has given you a personal check for payment. The
next day we went to North Branch, MN to a trailer park to see a  debtor
two payments behind.  Tim would do all the collecting and I would give
him suggestions to help him improve when he was done. The collection
visit was going well and Tim was asking all the right questions.

He collected two checks to bring the account current before the end of
the month. We were getting ready to leave and the debtor put out his
hand and Tim shook it. As we were walking back to the car I reminded Tim
of the no handshake rule and assured him the checks would bounce. Tim
felt confident the debtor would not bounce the checks because the home
would then be repossessed.

Both checks came back NSF and we repossessed the home. We still
laugh about how true the handshake rule really is.

(webmaster's note: actually, Shayne laughs about that more than I do)
