Don't carry a crow bar to a gun fight
Again, routine task: Change the locks, do a thorough inspection, take
some digital pics, post a 'No Trespassing' sign and the mobile home is
now repossessed.
I had a steamy cup of coffee on top of my vehicle, creating a swirling mist
into the cool early evening air. The back of my rig had the tail gate down
the upper gate, hatch, (whatever) was up. CLEARLY I am here in a very
conspicuous manner.
I have this slick little tool that can pop a regular lock in less than two
seconds, and work back a deadbolt in about 10. This particular lock was
a bit stubborn and required the use of my 'other' special tool. I use an 18
inch nail puller to wedge between the door and the jam. Last resort, but
does little to no damage and works like a charm.
I left the front steps of the repo to get new door locks, camera, computer,
etc. and suddenly four squad cars pull in. One in front, one at a 45 on my
vehicle's front left, one along side the left, and one right behind my
vehicle about 15 feet back.
The '15 feet back' cop said, "Drop the crowbar, Sir."
I was at the rear of my vehicle and asked if I could simply set it in among
my other gear.
Evidently this was not what he wanted to hear. "Please drop the crowbar,
Sir!" There was a little more firmness in his voice, and I did take note that
they were armed. I complied and dropped my special repo tool onto the
concrete. It went 'clank' when it hit the roadway.
After some questions and answers, (and displays of ID, company
computer, repo forms, and 'No Trespassing' signs) I watched one of the
Cedar Rapids PD cops click and speak into his shoulder mount radio.
"Yeah, it's just the repo man. You can call off the other units."
"Other units?" They already had FOUR!
Speak softly and carry a big stick? Good advice for most situations, but
